Transgender Guidance

Lancashire County Council have developed a guidance document to assist staff in managing trans equality issues with confidence, competence and consistency.

Schools are required to publish equality information and equality objectives.  Whilst it is not a legal requirement it is recommended that schools have an equality policy.  This policy should include a section on equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) children and young people, staff and parents.  The policy should clarify the approach of the school for pupils, staff, governors, parents/cares and external agencies.

The guidance seeks to provide a broad overview of the needs of transgender children, young people and their families.  What is most important is to speak openly and honestly with the child, young person and their family about how they feel and the kind of support they would like.  Children and young people should be treated respectfully and with dignity.
